Come to the St. Valentine's Dessert Fiesta to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Nuclear Resister ~ You are invited to a community celebration! Felice and Jack Cohen-Joppa, with the help of many others, have continued the work of the Nuclear Resister for 30 years, supporting imprisoned anti-nuclear and anti-war resisters across the country and around the world. St. Valentine gained his reputation as a friend of lovers when he defied the Emperor's edict forbidding soldiers to wed, and performed secret marriages in the temple. Single men were seen as more willing warriors, and Valentine was imprisoned because he acted on his faith that the power of love must prevail over the demands of war. Behind bars, he gave aid to other prisoners. Please join us for cake, coffee, cookies, cupcakes, chocolate, community, celebration, cake auction, chair massages and more! At St. Mark's Presbyterian Church, Calvin Room, 3809 E. 3rd St., Tucson Sliding scale: $10 - $30 ($1 for each year!) More info: 323-8697. Steve Pawlowski, Grand Canyon Chapter Water Sentinels Program coordinator, will tell us about the volunteer monitoring and other aspects of the Chapter’s Water Sentinels Program. The Water Sentinels collect data to protect the Verde River, one of Arizona’s last remaining and most important perennial rivers. In 2006, the American Rivers organization listed the Verde River as one of the 10 most endangered rivers in the United States because of excessive groundwater pumping that threatens its base flow. In the arid parts of Arizona, groundwater pumping can destroy rivers and their critically important riparian habitats. This human-caused phenomenon destroyed the Santa Cruz River, which used to flow through Tucson year round and the cottonwood-willow habitat it once nurtured. We can’t let this happen again! |
