The economic crisis of the past year has created a need for re-imagining possibilities within communities and social networks. As we work to build more sustainable and justice-based strategies we recognize that everyone has a story. Unfortunately, not all stories are heard or valued. The theme of the 9th Annual Local to Global Justice Teach-In, on February 27th and 28th, is Re-Storying Community. This year's event moves us closer to a social forum in which we can share our stories and listen to narratives that are too often pushed to the margins. By addressing issues of human rights, social and environmental justice, housing, transportation, health, childrearing, youth issues, and alternatives to predatory capitalism, we hope to strengthen alliances and learn through each other's experiences and visions for community. Featured sessions will foreground Indigenous voices and honor diverse visions of what it might mean to re-story community. SUBMIT A WORKSHOP PROPOSAL: The 2010 Local to Global Justice Teach-In will feature over 40 youth and adult workshops by individuals and organizations addressing a wide variety of topics. We invite performative and narrative based contributions, in addition to skill shares, workshops, installations, and multimedia presentations. If you are interested in holding a workshop or skill-share at the 2010 Teach-In, please complete and submit the online workshop proposal at http://localtoglobal.org/proposals.htm. The deadline to submit a proposal is January 15th by midnight. Let us know if you have any questions. Thanks! Local to Global Justice The 9th Annual Teach-In is coming to Tempe, AZ February 27th and 28th, 2010. For further information, please visit our website: www.localtoglobal.org The Tucson Tikkun Community's discussion this month will be led by Egyptian born Hussein Kamel. A frequent visitor to Egypt, Mr. Kamel has observed many changes. He will present an historic overview enliven by personal perspectives deriving from Islamic roots, a European education and intermarriage. Included in the discussion will be the current status of the Muslim Brotherhood, other Islamic movements, the Coptic Christian minority and the disappearing Jewish minority.
Cost: FREE—Sponsored by Tucson Dowsers Chapter of ASD Directions: North of W Ajo Way Contact: Terry & Steve Klunk (520) 531-8039 Description: Bring Your Kids / Grandkids – Calling all Wizards Ages 9-16! Join us for some fun learning how to use Dowsing! What is Dowsing? Dowsing is an ancient art used worldwide to access your intuition, your “knowing,” and the energy of the world around you, using dowsing tools. Not only used to find water, its use is limited only by your imagination. For example, you could use dowsing to find a lost object, or to decide which video game to purchase. What will I learn? You will learn how to use two popular dowsing tools, a pendulum and L-rods, to get “yes” and “no” answers to your questions.
Organizers Terry and Steve Klunk are members in good standing of the American Society of Dowsers. Steve is currently President of the Tucson Dowsers Chapter and both he and Terry have been active in this organization for several years. They teach Dowsing as well as other energy work. The Tucson Dowsers meet at Unity of Tucson on the first Saturday of each month from October through May, and are sponsoring this free program to share this life tool with young people, to give all possible assistance and encouragement to the development of the dowsing faculty. We believe this to be a tremendous aid in these times of massive change. You can find out more about Terry and Steve at www.RaphaelandRayne.com. www.TucsonDowsers.org

(refreshments at 5:30 & video at 6) SPONSORED BY: Local to Global Justice and The School of Transformation Justice (at ASU) ABOUT THE MOVIE: Features conversations that span 13 years between two formidable women whose lives and political work remain at the epicenter of the most important civil rights struggles in the US. Through the intimacy and depth of conversations, we learn about Davis, an internationally renowned scholar-activist and 88-year-old Kochiyama, a revered grassroots community activist and 2005 Nobel Peace Prize nominee's shared experiences as political prisoners and their profound passion for justice. On subjects ranging from the vital but largely erased role of women in social movements of the 20th century, community empowerment, to the prison industrial complex, war and the cultural arts, Davis' and Kochiyama's comments offer critical lessons for understanding our nation's most important social movements and tremendous hope for its youth and the future. The art of local artist and pastor, Robert Jackson, is on exhibit during February, Black History Month, at Mountain Vista UU, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Northwest Tucson. Over the years Jackson has been commissioned to do portraits, landscapes, and book illustrations. He has also sold several murals, one of which has been on display at McDonald's in Robinsdale, Minnesota, where he was born in the mid-1970s. Robert's art has also been on display in collaboration with Dr. John Bigger (The Celebration of Life Project) and Helen De Michelle at the Walker Art Museum (The Listening Project). Robert works in multi media and varied subjects, as displayed in this show.
His philosophy about his art is that it is "a story that he is sharing. It was once stated that it takes days to read a book, it takes hours to watch a movie, but the story one gains from a work of art is captured in a matter of seconds." Jackson lives in Tucson with his wife and three children. An Artist Reception will be held on Sunday, February 21, at 12:10 PM in the Sanctuary is free and open to the public. Other viewings of the art at the 10:30 am Sunday services or by appointment. Contact Elizabeth Reed at 520-269-3414 or reedlsts@gmail.com.
